I am trying to raise awareness of the plight of polar bears in the Canadian Arctic by creating them in clay. Their environment is changing, the receding ice is making it increasingly difficult for them to feed and raise their young. I have chosen the raku process for two reasons. Firstly, there is a randomness to the end result in the patterns - firing results are not completely controllable - always a surprise! Secondly, I appreciate the irony of using a 1000 degree kiln and multiple smoke environments to represent an animal that lives in the cold of the arctic.
I also sculpt whale tails and inuksuks (inuit land markers).
