Naked Raku is a western version of the traditional Japanese Raku method of putting ceramics in a reduction environment after initial firing. These causes cracking and flaking of the glaze which is eventually removed. I like this process because there is a randomness to the end result. The patterns are difficult to control so it is usually a surprise! I have focused on whale tails (inspired by Migaloo, the white whale that commutes up and down the east coast of Australia) and polar bears (from my native Canada). I have also sculpted inuksuks (Inuit land markers).
